Australia’s Diesel import vulnerabilities update May 2024

Given the increase in Middle East tensions after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh on 31 July 2024 in Tehran, it is time to look at Australian oil vulnerabilities

Diesel consumption increased 3.5% pa over 14 years

Fig 1: Diesel sales increased over 14 years from 1,900 ML to 2,800 ML per month

The 19% increase in imports will not continue but rather trend towards the growth in consumption.

Diesel imports grew faster than consumption because Australian refineries shut down over time, one after the other, without governments – not to mention the public – being overly concerned. There is a big oil strategic difference between
• importing crude from a variety of sources and refining it in Australia
• and importing fuels mainly from Asia
